How to Renew Your California Notary Commission
Your commission lasts four years. Renew before it expires and you may qualify for the shorter refresher course. Here's the timeline and the catch.

A California notary commission is valid for four years. Renewing is similar to your first appointment, with one important shortcut if you act in time.
Start early: 6 to 9 months out
Do not wait for your commission to lapse. Begin your renewal education 6 to 9 months before your expiration date so there is no gap in your ability to notarize.
The 3-hour refresher, and the catch
If you are a currently-commissioned notary renewing before your current commission expires, you may take a shorter 3-hour refresher course instead of the full six hours. If your commission has already expired, you must take the full 6-hour course again, no exceptions.
The rest is the same
After the course you retake the state exam, complete a new Live Scan background check, receive your new commission packet, and file your oath and bond with the county clerk within 30 days. Your supplies carry over, though you will update your seal with the new commission dates.
Renewing? If your commission is close to expiring, take the 6-hour course to be safe, it is valid whether or not your commission has lapsed.
